Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, as announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday.
Gambhir, a key player in India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad, has signed a three-year contract, succeeding Rahul Dravid.
The appointment came after Gambhir and W.V. Raman were interviewed by the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee, chaired by Ashok Malhotra, through a Zoom session. Despite Raman’s detailed presentation, the committee unanimously recommended Gambhir for the position.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah welcomed Gambhir’s appointment on social media, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the team in modern cricket’s fast-evolving landscape.
“It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr. Gautam Gambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Having excelled in various roles throughout his career, Gautam’s clear vision and vast experience make him the ideal choice to steer Indian Cricket forward,” Shah wrote.
Gambhir is set to commence his tenure this month and will serve until December 31, 2027, aligning with the timeframe leading up to the next ODI World Cup.
